This index tracks the price per bushel of wheat. These particular wheat prices are measured and traded through the Kansas Board of Trade; this pricing will appear different than the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) numbers. Wheat is the primary grain used in U.S. grain products - approximately three-quarters of all U.S. grain products are made from wheat flour.

WHAT DR. ED SAYS:

This index is vital for a bank that deals with agriculture-based businesses. However, wheat prices do not only affect agriculturally-focused banks. This index affects a variety of industries and input costs for production. As wheat is manufactured and demand rises for it, we see cost diffusion through prices in livestock, fuels and at the supermarket. Wheat is a substitutable commodity for some, but other industries are largely dependent on the product. Find out which industries in your market are susceptible to commodity risk.
