Quarterly Analytic Update
For this briefing, Jamie Sumner, chief analyst, reviews the 4Q performance of the community bank benchmark group. Overall, the net interest margin continued to increase, despite a jump in deposit costs, and net PPP loan growth was greater than 3%. On the funding side, we saw a net outflow of non-brokered deposits, which increased the need for wholesale funding. The average ROAA decreased 4 basis points, fueled primarily by the increase in noninterest expense. As for the S&B Total Risk Index, our measure of total risk increased slightly quarter over quarter as capital and liquidity risk increased.
